Authentic Hawaiian Loco Moco with Homemade Hamburger Patty and Over-Soft Fried Egg
A classic Hawaiian comfort dish featuring a homemade hamburger patty, over-soft fried egg, and rich brown gravy served over steamed white rice.

Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 cups cooked white rice
- 4 eggs
- to taste salt and pepper
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix together until well combined. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side or until cooked to your desired level of doneness.
- While the patties are cooking, heat a separate skillet over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the skillet and fry them to your liking, keeping in mind that traditionally they are over soft with runny yolks. It will take about 2-3 minutes to get them over soft.
- To make the gravy, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and continue to cook for 1-2 minutes, until the mixture turns a light brown color.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
- Once the patties are cooked, remove them from the skillet and keep them warm.
- On a plate, place a serving of rice, and top with a cooked patty. Ladle gravy over the patty and top with a fried egg.
